This 1st Runner-Up of Thailand National Roasting Championship 2018, Phil Coffee Company Moves from Secluded Ekkamai ally to Sukhumvit soi 51

By Wariya I.

This family business moved to Sukhumvit 51 alley from their previous location in a charming yet secluded town house in Ekkamai alley. The new location is now ‘fairly’ easy commute from Bangkok’s BTS Skytrain. Just get to Thong Lo BTS Station, walk a few minutes or take a motorcycle into 51 alley.

The trio, Han and his sisters, Iwuen and Jaszmine Wang started the business as an artisan coffee roaster 8 years ago to deliver quality coffee to coffee buffs in Bangkok before expanding to a low-volume cafe. The siblings blend the beans themselves with extreme love and care.

Previously, Phil Coffee Company worked with farmers out of Thailand but recently, local farmers from Chiang Rai joined them. The family, appreciate the best in both worlds by supporting Thai coffee farming along with quality imported beans from across the globe

The siblings all contribute in their own ways, Han as the coffee connoisseur, Jaszmine as the administrator and service operator, and Iwuen as the talented designer. Just look at their packaging! Who wouldn’t want to grab a bag to go? Which is what Phil Coffee also provide, a collection of their roasted beans to take home besides enjoying a sit-in with a hot or chilled brew.

The new cafe can accommodate approximately 20 persons seated and regardless of the simplicity of the interior and decorations, the cafe itself is very inviting and it doesn’t try hard to be hipster-fied.

With plain white walls and minimalist furniture, the cafe serves its purpose in making people pay special attention to the coffee itself. It’s also comfortable to sit and spend some reflective time, otherwise it’s a cool and quiet place to work remotely.

That’s if you don’t mind being seen! The frontage is wrapped entirely by glass so any passers-by can scope out the inside activity.

Although coffee is the protagonist here, other beverages such as teas, hot coco and smoothie can be found in this place because non-coffee lovers are more than welcome.

And fear not for those of you who have health concerns, Iwuen confirmed that they don’t believe in additives, which you will never find any chemicals in their beverages.

To be fair, they don’t even put sugar or syrup in your latte because they believe quality ingredients should provide enough flavours themselves. According to this, the menu has to be changed 2 times a year.

At the corner of the cafe’s wooden long bar, you can sit and enjoy the view where they provide a chess box for those who love to sharpen their minds.

If you haven’t played chess before, maybe this is the perfect time for you to start, since the number of people who are addicted to their smartphone grows, this could be the much needed welcoming distraction from the screen that’s needed
