Bangkok is a foodie’s heaven indeed, from all the delicious Western food you can find down to region-specific Thai dishes. Some of the most popular dishes from Thailand are known to hail from the North East of Thailand, specifically Isaan and Laotian border, where you will find the roots of dishes, such as Som tum or Larb. Some other popular dishes are more region specific such as Khao Soi from the North or Khua Kling Moo Saab from the South, but beside all of this, what if we tell you that there are more delicious gems to uncover in a smaller part of the country, hidden right in front of our eyes!

Located at the lower cusp of Isaan, the Eastern Thai region is blessed with the abundant sea, fertile soil to grow delicious tropical fruits we all know and love such as Durian and Rambutan, and home to region-specific herbs that make the cuisine so unique. Being mostly ports back in the days, many signature dishes also took influences from other cultures such as Chinese, Portugese and even Cambodia, the neighbor next door as well.

While the highlight ingredients of the region are fresh seafoods, local herbs and fruits such as Kumquats, Coconut Shoots, Chamueng Leaves and Krawan create distinctive flavours combination that makes Eastern Thai Cuisine a must try. While the region is only a couple of hours away from Bangkok via car, those of us who don’t want to venture out can discover the authentic taste of the East right here in Bangkok. Visit these restaurants to sample underdog of Thai Cuisine yourself.
