Chef Francesco Lenzi’s latest addition on Wireless (Witthayu) Road further explores his family roots. After Lenzi Tuscan Kitchen in Ruamrudee, which focuses on traditional family recipes from the Tuscan region in a fine dining setting, Nonna Nella (Grandma Nella in Italian) pays homage to Chef Lenzi’s much beloved grandmother, in a casual and homey, open-space environment.

Nonna Nella’s located at All Seasons Place offers wheels of cheese and salumi (cured meats) hanging from the window front-glass chiller, as well as jars of marinated vegetables, sauces and other artisanal goodies imported from Lenzi’s family farm and are displayed around the dining area. All products are available for sale.

On the menu, you’ll find exceptionally tasty versions of usual suspects like Pizza Napoletana and Spaghetti Carbonara among other homemade pasta dishes, but as everything Chef Francesco touches, carry his signature ‘fine’ tuning and original twist.

Take what is probably the most extreme example of his creativity, a unique pizza combo he dreamed up one day when developing a pasta recipe. Apart from mozzarella and pancetta, this special pizza combines prawns and biroldo, a blackish, soft-textured Tuscan blood sausage, with chunks of meat, fat and pig offal such as heart, lungs and tongue.

This seafood and blood-offal medley may seem like an abomination to some but the rustic fusion of flavours has became one of Nonna Nella’s biggest hits, adopting the name of Nonna herself – the Nonna Nella Pizza.

Besides experiencing these original flavours, the pizza’s aesthetic makes an impact when it arrives to the table, a steaming bloody burgundy coloured pie with irregular patches of fat and gristle. It’s a dream dish for any Instagrammers feed.

But it’s not only the pizza that gets the funky Lenzi treatment. The semifreddo, a favorite frozen dessert, is a ubiquitous Italian treat, typically a mousse-like mixture of egg, sugar and cream.

But Nonna Nella’s version will evoke that nostalgic moment for any child who experienced peeling the wrapper of a Mars Bar, KitKat or Snickers bar. That feeling of not having a care in world! There’s no surprise that this childhood-inspired indulgence, made up of chocolate, wafer, mascarpone and caramel sauce is named – wait for it – the Semifreddo della Nonna!
