Bangkok Foodies Review – Birds Rotisserie

Freedom to protest, 35 hour work week and the best succulent roast chicken you can sink your teeth into. These are just few of the things the French take terribly seriously! Just a chicken you say? BIRDS Rotisserie chickens proudly wave the free-range flag with chickens from Khao Yai farm which haven’t been pumped with chemicals or antibis. BIRDS also double up on the feel-goods, using (by majority), organic vegetables for salads and sides.

But how does it taste? Now this is a question foodies are pondering. Well, with two of Bangkok’s most likeable French Chefs, Chef Julien Lavigne and Chef Jeremy Tourret, I found there was no danger of “too many cooks (or egos) spoiling the broth”,

BIRDS is a cosy establishment located in Nang Lingchi Road, which comfortably seats a few tables of 4-5 inside ,2 larger groups on the terrace and – of course – for foodies, along the bar stools lining their open kitchen. The first elements which strike you is their enormous red neon chicken sign, the high ceilings and the chickens turning slowly in a widowed rotisserie. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the decor industrial x barnyard chic. It’s only the immense and often repeated Bird logos stamped on the walls which can feel a little overbearing.

Sampling the Salads was a feat bigger than anticipated, they range from 210 THB – 290 THB ++ and they are generously portioned! I particularly liked Birds Caesar with its balance of sweet and creamy, zesty (garlic flower) and crunchy (the cauliflower bits were a fabulous touch). The best would have to be Super Grilled with an eclectic combination of avocado, jobs tears, bell pepper, pumpkin, nuts with a dressing of balsamic and coconut.

The creamy and clean-tasting chicken liver pate gets an honorable mention and so do the Sides of Root Baby Carrots (150++) and Young Potatoes (120++), although it’s a shame the Char-Grilled Corn lacked char but nothing close to unforgivable.

Chef Jeremy glides across the kitchen with a light footed grace and ease, and it’s only the oncoming sight of sweat beads which betrays him, he his meticulous and detailed in the most casual of ways. And when he places that beautifully brown, crisp-skinned, steaming chicken onto the long wooden board your heart skips a beat, for the chicken of course.

Unlike any other roast chicken available, this one has had 3 days to marinate in Jeremy’s secret rub recipe, resulting in that meaty melt-in-mouth sensation with bonafide nuances of earth and flora. BIRDS raises the rotisserie bar to a whole nother level, a new contender in a world of fine dining Vs casual food, which BIRDS have managed to intertwine.

BKF HOT TIPS:
Book your seats to avoid disappointment, and don’t come late as the chickens run out around 9ish.

Go for the Angry Birds Sauce (35THB++) or Sriracha Mayo (35THB++), and definitely the Chicken Jus Tarragon (45THB++).
