Lady Brett Tavern

Bangkok Foodies Review – Lady Brett

So if you’re a Sukhumvit bunny, warm and fuzzy in your hole and a little fretful to venture over to the “other side”, yes I’m talking about Silom and Sathorn, then there’s no avoiding or denying the existence of ROCKET in Sathorn soi 12. Made notorious by trendy street rags and foodie folk tales, ROCKET has extended its territory next door and they named her LADY BRETT. For a year now, she’s been quietly tantalizing the locals with mix reviews. But not – so I’ve heard –  shaking up the place like her suggestively robust name promises. I suppose that’s why the team at Lady Brett are giving her a fresh menu make-over.

Luckily for us we were going in blind; virgin lady Lady Brett tasters, no reminiscing on the good times or expecting a whole new relationship to develop. The menu, as tavern style suggests, was short and sweet. It was this meat or seafood with that sauce or side.Even pointing out what drinks were to be had BEFORE, DURING and AFTER, like some kind of bossy aunt. But it’s Lady Brett’s succulent specials which were too hard to ignore. The atmosphere? A tavern, but a superficial one at that. A classy joint with classy prices, but nothing to enrage any loyal ROCKET followers.

If you’re going to make the trip here, you’d be wasting your experience not to try one or two of their signature cocktails. Their Scandinavian barman with the neat grizzly beard will charm up a spell and spend some minutes chewing your ear off about it. There’s no lack of passion in mixology here. Go for the berry cocktail, “Mulberry Shrub Fizz”. This will surely be a date pleaser – tart with jabs of sweetness. Or the “London to Bangkok” – gin topped with shaved cucumber, light and refreshing if a little overzealous on the crushed ice, both 330 THB.

The “Sunflower Shoots” Salad was not too shabby with it’s rustic mixed leaves drizzled with Mulberry Vinegar added with slivers of Red Radish and crispy Prosciutto for 240 THB. But I preferred Lady Brett’s version of beef Carpaccio salad from their Specials.

The fish of the day, “Phuket Pink Snapper” was chunky and satisfying, maybe a tad dry but again the Specials offer of Tapas Prawns was a lot tastier.

Ultimately, the Australian Black Angus Beef Cheek and dessert that followed made up for any minor shortcomings. The Beef cheek was buttery tender; the mash, creamy and supple, and when consumed with generous amounts of rich gravy, was like a warm hug in Lady Brett’s bosom.

But do you want to know what really took us to ecstasy? It was the Chocolate Sundae. As boring and pedestrian it may sound, it was a far cry from a Grease sequel movie but a mini explosion of oral sensations. A flair of Milk Chocolate Mousse, Ecuadorian Chocolate Ice Cream, Salted Nuts & Fudge Brownie for just 230 THB. It will make you want to sneak out at night and knock on her door again.
