The Lobby at Peninsula Riverside Dining
Bangkok Foodies Review – The Lobby
First of all the view from The Lobby terrace is absolutely stunning, so book to sit outside if you want to maximize the majestic evening horizon and the zipping to-and-fro of the glittery boats which is unfortunately punctuated by some garish pink or blue lit party boat monstrosity playing “She Bangs! She Bangs!” If you’re looking for something more sullen and executive-meeting like with the tenor of a sleepy piano in the background, then inside is definitely more your thing.
Now for food. Highlights, without a doubt were the two “off” set menu dishes, the Lobster & Seafood Bisque which was creamy and succulent but very fine tasting, the other not a dish but a cocktail recommended by the F&B Manager, the Moscow Mule, the perfectly balanced Tito vodka, ginger beer lime juice and syrup which was the ultimate quenching to one’s penchant for alcohol. Yet, dodge the Inside-out-Cocktail, it’s an impressive and gargantuan ice ball but with the taste of Soi 11 Van cocktail inside.
The set menu items which were very good, namely the Angus Beef Carpaccio with quail egg, if it were a little less oily and the taste of Parmesan more prominent it would have been perfect, the Hokkaido Scallops were actually perfect, meaty, juicy and tender, no complaints there, but the major bummer would have to be the Surf and Turf which texture and flavour were similar to an industrial meatloaf but with seafood in the mix. The Cod fish was a positive, light and cooked to perfection and the Floating Island dessert was to die for! However, avoid the Paris-Brest, too many conflicting textures and temperatures having an internal battle where nobody wins.
I can’t go without mentioning the service, which we found to be excellent, well spoken and attentive staff who weren’t buzzing around or taking semi eaten plates away. Yes, we like to sup up every morsel if it’s good!
All in all, it was a marvelous experience, the view, the delicious dishes even with some misses, the kind service and the fact that you’ll walk away “richer” with this 3 course fine dining experience bargain, just makes that glittering view and somehow your company, that much more sexier. ” 2 more Moscow Mules please”!
