The Capital Water Library
Bangkok Foodies Review – Water Library
Don’t be disillusioned by how the stark decor and unfortunately lit interior of the Empire Tower “under construction” welcomes you. Hope shall rise once again after taking a trip up the escalator to the The Capital. The immediate impression is industrial chic, with a touch of Steampunk and a light splashing of cliche. We’re guided past brass lockers and freshly upholstered pinstriped padded seats framed by chrome bars alongside windows framed by sheer synthetic material.
The upper class status is evident at The Capital but the ambiance is still warm and comfortable. Though the booth seatings are fairly wide apar,t meaning good first date material – lot’s of gazing at a safe distance but not practical for the snuggly types. Good! Snuggling is so MK Restaurant.
The Menu comes in leather bound boards with small print and intimidating mixed fonts. Just how we should like them. We are attended by vest wearing waiters with International accents and pretty girls in little black Audrey Hepburn dresses, who you’ll later find wielding enormous Peugeot pepper grinders over your meaty bits.
We were recommended to try the Maryland Style Crab Cake, which we did and took a punt on a ubiquitous Bangkok favorite, the smoked salmon salad. The crab cake was exceptional, crumbed and crisp to perfection with stringy blue swimmer crab emanating it’s sea fresh goodness from the fork. The same freshness was to be said about the salmon. The quality and non-oily salmon was accompanied with a delicious dressing but sadly spoiled by the bottom-grocery-shelf taste of the Iceberg lettuce.
This particular branch of Water Library focuses on imported quality cuts of meats from all over the world. We decided to take a culinary journey to Japan for the Grass fed Rib Eye Wagyu and for the lamb, Australia – Victoria to be precise – and because it sounds so much swankier.
The first round of lamb arrived a tad undercooked from rare and the Wagyu a touch als,o but the much more than mediocre meat is everything it promises. It’s done with intensive care and it taste fine. For myself perhaps too careful and fine, I’m aware Thai’s are not a fan of the famed funky gamy lamb odour or strong taste for that matter, but isn’t that what makes that furry fellow so favorite from the rest? Albeit the sides were a whole new homestyle heaven. The spinach baked with garlic confit and rosemary roast potatoes with Wagyu beef drippings won’t have you crying home to mama.
Yet The Capital surprises mostly with it’s…I wish I could curse right now… desserts. Clearly one of the best I’ve sampled and also in the opinion of the fussy French foodie who gazed across, not at me, but at the glistening nippled meringues atop the most luscious lemon tart. Don’t get me started on the Apple Pie with Madagascar Vanilla Ice Cream. Tastes extravaganza but there’s clearly plenty to explore at The Capital. Namely the desserts list; Red Velvet and Baked Alaska already conjuring up warm and fuzzy feelings inside.
