Bangkok Foodies Review – Veganerie

For the first time ever, I was taken on a mystery Sunday brunch. We found ourselves in a quiet street just behind Benjasiri Park. There, I saw a familiar ”V” sign, which continued to spell out- “VEGANERIE”. I died a little bit inside, but my mood quickened after entering. The Veganerie establishment is airy and comforting. A minimal concept punctuated by marble tables, polished wood, blackboard signs, terrariums that line the window, some rather sad looking tipped pot plants and fauna hanging limply from the ceiling centerpiece. It’s nothing we haven’t seen before, but thedimly lit, mod, yet homely appeal works.

The latte came out in a tall glass and was* expletive* hot. Allowing the coffee to sit for over five minutes didn’t allow it to come any closer to my lips. Which was probably a good thing in retrospect, as it was God awful. Whatever was the substitute for real milk- in this case, local Thai Soy Milk, left a putrid, metallic and bitter after taste on my tongue. I’ve had Soy Lattes in Melbourne aplenty. so by my brilliant powers of deduction, the soy milk was either burnt or simply dodgy in taste.

I wasn’t about to re-live that experience, so instead, moved onto the Vegan Choc Banana Smoothie. The polar opposite effect. In fact, I’ve never had a Choc Banana Smoothie this good. Thick and muddy in texture, deep and chocolaty rich, like a mason jar filled with liquid brownies. It’s difficult to believe this treat is void of milk and cream, but I can bet you a jog in the park, there’s a ship load of sugar in there. And the cherry on the Smoothie top? Just happened to be deliciously creamy coconut whipping, not at all like the artificial canned cream counterpart.

Grateful for the experience, and not completely burnt by the latte debacle, I’m looking forward to returning to try the all- Vegan food menu. Particularly the dishes I saw coming out looking large and lovingly plated. On my hit list; vegan mushroom Larb, vegan Caesar Salad with vegan bacon and waffles with …get this…vegan chicken!
