Bangkok Foodies Review – Garibaldis

Despite having a name like a mouthful of marbles, yet later come to enjoy the sensation of saying it, this centrally located restaurant is yet to be exploited by the overzealous foodies of this city.

Almost smack bang in the middle of Soi 16 at Somerset Lake Point Tower, you can see from its concrete facade set away from the busy street that some ravenous eyes may miss it. It’s only until you get close does the lit sign and wood colouring pencil pack design hit you in the face. Left to the entrance is a lovely outdoor courtyard coddled by plants and shadowed by trees. They tell me it’s position captures a “wind tunnel” effect, so there’s always a breeze which is welcoming for Bangkok’s brutal heat.

In an upside down “U’ shape design the bar elongates to the right, the open kitchen along the back spine and all the dining to the left and in between. The bar staff? Friendly and diligent but that doesn’t mean squat if they can’t make a good cocktail, to which they did, excellently. Seats were occupied as it seems, mostly from a large party, but there were a few young group of friends enjoying wine and sharing dishes and the odd smattering of seriously discussing couples.

First dish that came out was the Grilled Vegetables with Scamorza 340THB, we were impressed by the generous amounts of glistening chunky vegetable but surprised by the grilled cheese stiffened on top, welcome the Scamorza. Not sure if I found the post melted cheese, now cold, atop of cold veggies my favorite temperature taste sensation, but the smokiness of the cheese and quality of vegetables were delicious if unfamiliar to me. I was happy to discover an Italian tradition I have now been skooled in. The tuna tartar with avocado and rocket was also impressive, fresh and creamy but not so memorable in comparison.

From their newly updated menu we ordered the spinach pasta, homemade Cappellacci filled with ragout, mozzarella, zucchini, and cherry tomato sauce 400THB. Like a scene out of ‘When Harry Met Sally’ there was a lot of eyes rolling back, moaning and banging on the table in ecstasy, okay maybe with a little less over acting but it really was quite incredible.

Then the little lamb came out, lamb chops with mushroom, mash and berry sauce 820THB. And like Mary leading her sheep to the slaughter we enjoyed every succulent and slightly gamy bite of our lamb. By far one of the nicest lamb dishes I’ve tried in Bangkok. Yet, do avoid the swordfish, the sauce was divine but the fish was clearly overcooked. This I’m assured will be corrected in the future.

For the dessert I’ll leave that up to you to figure out, but given their overall track record, the Italian centric dishes with a Thai twist like the Coconut Pannacotta with Lime Sauce and the Catalan Creme with Cinnamon should not disappoint.
